weekend table projects and how to be awesome 101

obviously when you are taking a picture to show how the wonderbar has transformed your skin from pretty amazing to really really fucking awesome you don't want to take it in a cave at night. and you certainly don't want to do it right after you smoked a powerbong.
also, i didn't realize my forehead was so high i could have played queen elizabeth instead of cate blanchett. i mean they wouldn't have needed a prosthetic forehead bc i am in possession of an awesome, camera-ready elizabethan fivehead.

this is a cheap ikea table that is real actual wood and i am going to paint it ballet slipper pink this weekend and it's going to be fiona's nightstand. an adorable yellow ginger jar lamp will sit on top.

also this is my new desk. thank you susie. i am going to paint it black. again. from martha's new line called "silhouette" in high gloss. now if i just lived in canada i would buy that gd mirror i spied on craigslist. that way i could stare at my fivehead while i blogged. total inspiration.

hello peeps. i present another craigslist challenge for you. this one was not easy. a) it was in canada and apparently canadians view craigslist as their own antiques shop. and b) they don't use it very much. anyway, here is what canada(dry) ginger(ale)i'm awesome wrote us:

so i grabbed a few inspiration pics from the 'netz..
so these were the longest buffet/credenza type pieces in the art deco style i came across. the majority are rather short and stocky with those trademark rounded edges. and craigslist canada came up short across the board...but i thought with some art deco hardware...
a few of these pieces could transform...

ok, so not necessarily this one but it's so beautiful as is...it's also $1,288. which is fucking r'tarded. but i would offer half and tell them that they are eternal fartknockers for using the craig as their own personal antiques shop. no really the best thing to do here is say, ok..well..here is my number, i am offering half so if you change your mind let me know. and then i would strip the shit out of it. show off that gorgeous hardware.

and i about shit my pants when i saw this mirror...$350 i LOVE IT!!!!! not art deco, and not what you asked for but i had to alert canada to its greatness..you're welcome canada.

vintage credenza- $125 great price. fair. paint this any color and you have success.

1940's hutch- $375 (this price includes a table and chairs- they are willing to sell the pieces sep. i would offer 175 for this piece. but if you click the link you will see another pic of the table and chairs and in that pic in the background is a long deco looking buffet. ask about it) that said, this piece was the deco-y-ist thing i found. i think it's great and would look awesome either stripped to it's original wood or painted a different color. and maybe new hardware. hard to tell what's going on here.

solid oak cabinet- $200. could be good with some paint (black and shiny) and some of those fancy deco pulls. good price (although half first please).

ok, not deco at all but i LOOOVe it. this is a gorgeous piece. you could paint it but i think it's perfect the way it is. $425 but that's negotiable. offer half of course. i would punch babies for this.

danish teak sideboard- $560 ridiculous price again. not on craigslist. i mean what are these people thinking? if they want these prices they need to sell this through a dealer. anyway..you said you had a mid century piece in the dining room and this is cool. i think a piece like this would look so cool with a bunch of girly granny mix-matched china on it.

so ginger to reiterate..art deco hutches that are long are pretty much non existent, the style was just so stocky. and those that are somewhat long like the insp. pics are like 23589713701839matillion dollars. so if art deco is truly what you want find a dealer in ottowa or montreal and tell them what you are looking for, what you are willing to pay and have them start looking for you.
hopefully i found something you like! nothing would make me happier.

i want this room. i want those fabric covered walls, the matching headboard and bedskirt and those porthault linens, those lamps...all of it! it looks like the most perfect bedroom ever for lounging around sunday morning reading magazines, the paper and eating chocolate croissant with delicious coffee. followed by tickles with fiona and then a gigantic poop.
don't you desperately agree with me?
do you think the fabric covered everything is too granny? too much? a dust nightmare? (probably yes to that last one which in reality would be a major issue for my OCD's)

lowe's has a buttload of hanging boston ferns in right now and i got 2 for 10 bucks!! whole food's had the same boston ferns for 15 bucks each. i am going to get 2 more for my porch tomorrow!

also someone on atlanta's craigslist is selling this mitchell gold and bob williams sofa for 300 bucks. it has a little cat claw damage on the arms and a stain on the seat. but other than that it looks to be in great shape. any takers? here.

beautifully carved french sofa- $585 it is quite unique and you could make it waaay cooler by covering it in a gorgeous nubby black linen and maybe gold leaf the wood. drool. sexballs.

french provincial sofa- $300 same advice as above. or go opposite with some white linen and silver leaf. but the possibilities are endless.

3 piece antique settee- $400 gorgeous.

french settee- $300 probs too small for your sofa purposes but happy in a bedroom or next to your dining room table. cover it in something durable and washable. oh and forgo the tufting. i love tufting but not on this piece. it's like a fat chick in thigh highs to me for some reason.

remember when i told the world that i would cut a bitch for some of these??? yeah, well. i finally ate some. a whole box in fact. let me just say that yes, they are as good as everyone says they are. and yes, there are some flavors that taste similar to turds floating in an acid bath. i didn't have a list of flavors so i had to guess a lot. there was one that i am pretty sure was either honeysuckle or orange blossom that blew my mind!! the rose, caramel, honeysuckleorangeblossom and vanilla were the best. but they all got eaten. even the acid turds. and you have to eat them pretty much all at once, otherwise they get all dried out. a few times i thought i was gonna puke. but it would have been a beautiful puke show. rainbow puke.
how did i get these cookies?? my blog pal bailey at peppermint bliss sent them to me from london. smuggled them past fed ex actually..seriously, she went to major lengths to get them to me. and i am eternally grateful to her. this is part of our email conversation:

(sads about the darkness- its dreary here today) but...
aren't they fabulous? i have susie quillin over at eyespy to thank for them, she was all "here...take em!" . for realz. woman is sitting on a treasure trove of craigslist scores from 2 white panton chairs to a fabulous driftwood floor lamp that would send your lady pole into multiples. anyway, these chairs....there are 2 of each!! TWO OF EACH!!!!!!! the fabric on the chippendale chairs was so grossballs that i took them off the minute i got them home. but remember this? it's going on those chippendales. i am taking them in this week to the upholsterer. the robin's egg isn't terrible but its not the best paint job. it's slopped on pretty thick so i'd like to strip them and start over at some point. but i am going to live with the blue for a while. since it's not awfulpants.

the top chairs are in need of some love as well, both upholstery wise and structurally. but i have no idea the direction i am going to go here yet. oh but i am excited!!

in other news...

susie and i (susie) worked on the new blog most of today and i can honestly say i am inloverobertpattinsonstyle with the way it looks. you all will be too. its very me and susie is very very good. i highly recommend her to you for your new blog look needs.

that said i am pretty sure between now and tomorrow there might be a magic spell over the internets when you try to read my (your favorite) blog. so please be patient and come back. you might have to re-do stuff which i really do hate for you but if you don't you will miss my foray into the super rich and famous. so come back and re-follow etc... i will hopefully have all the pertinent info you will need to make the transition gracefully and without much frustration.

happy spring all of you. this is going to be a great season. i feel it. i never in a million years predicted this blogging thing. not like i predicted i would win an oscar by age 30. i mean i thought at this point in my life i would be staring at at least 2 of them on my mantel. or near the shitter b/c i am clearly too cool to put them on a mantel. plus from a decor perspective that's tackballs. anyway. i am off to susie's office today for the big blog change! that's right, MFAMB is going dot com. as you know MFAMB has done quite a lot of work lately finding good shit on craigslist for you. and while i am good at finding great deals and worthy castoffs i haven't really even begun to tap into all that i am capable of here. in a nutshell i believe i can probably recreate a room off of craigslist. or get really fucking close. this obviously all depends on whether you are close to a major city or you live in the middle of alaska. so imagine me like a decorator only instead of all new shit i get all the stuff affordable like off of craigslist. i know this is nothing new for decorators who work within a budget, many of them shop craigslist all the time. i am not reinventing the wheel here, just offering my services to find it for you at a cost. b/c as fun as all of this has been it has been ridiculously time consuming.
don't believe i can do it, or it's worth paying me for???...well then just read what others are saying:

bench/daybed- $395 this kicks ass. add an outdoor protective varnish like marine varnish and offer half what they're asking. 250 tops. it's way cool.

glass top table- $50 this is super unique. use it as a buffet for an outdoor party. its 50 bucks!!! but it's probs heavy as elephant balls. bring men and a truck.

vintage patio furniture- $180 am i crazy to like this stuff? i do. talk about mid century. you could paint it anything.

table and chairs- $125 the table has great legs. a coat of paint on those chairs and maybe some cushions in a girly fabric would take it up a notch.

custom picnic table- $225 this guy will build you what you want or you can pick one of his many options and he can put an outdoor stain on it. one of a kind shit is cool. he will also deliver for the price of gas.

large outdoor metal table- $125 love it. offer 100. pair it with some of the chairs below.

pottery barn outdoor chairs- $150 (they are selling a table too but it's ugly) the chairs are not though. offer 100. pay 120.

2 wrought iron and leather stools- $25 for both!! get them. these are awesome. great for extra seating. clean up that black leather and paint the bottom white!!! gorgeous. take these indoors for all the time and outside when you are having a party.

6 ft. long rustic bench- $75 could be a coffee table too!! you could cover it with a cute tablecloth or paint it, i would paint it a creamy, milky white.

solid wrought iron table- $40 extra table/seating. offer 20.

so before i looked for her stuff i emailed her and asked if she would drive the 3 hours to atlanta for a great deal. this is what she said:

I would be willing to go to atl for one hell of a bargain. I really need some kind of fab dresser to use as a tv stand in my living room. gentleman's desk- $40 paint this beauty black or gray and outfit it with some sexy hardware. this is a classic desk. sturdy and cool. yes.

2 small black leather chairs- $100 good deal. probs could offer 75 for both.

antique oak dresser- $250. offer 175. it's a great piece. you could modernize it with shiny paint in a bright color and some modern pulls. or like me, strip it to a pale wood tone and wax it up. then put it under your tv next to those modern black leather chairs. it's all about balance.

vintage chair -$25 for 1 or $40 for 2. great chairs. fabric them up in something good:

dresser- $25 another option for under your tv. it's got a more modern feel and they are practically giving it away, but not sure how great it is in person. it's worth checking out. again, paint it shiny and add some sexy chinoiserie hardware.

antique table and chairs- $300. fuck the table, go for those chairs. paint them and add new cushions in a great fabric. those chairs are amazeballs USA.

oak breakfast set- $150. the table is fine- the stain is hideous. but my money is on those windsor chairs. classic chairs. paint them.

green settee- $250. a little pricey but you could probs get it for 150. it's a great in between size and with some killer fabric in say a chevron or big stripe it would be amaze.

4 chinoiserie-esque chairs- $200. great price for 4 chairs that you could paint something delicious.

8 x 10 rug- $200 OBO. never been used! love it.

pair of bamboo chairs-$200. paint these bitches shiny black and add some new fabric on those cushions. dumb.

crate and barrel azure sofa- $800 craigslist pricey but less than half of what was paid. and you could always offer less.

mid century loveseat- ?? they are selling a sofa and loveseat for $350 so you could offer a lot less i'm sure. it has great lines and looks in good structural condition. the retro fabric isn't too bad. but i would def change it.

3 white nesting tables- make an offer. fuck dude, offer them 20 bucks! they're great and maybe you could funk them up with some faux snakeskin or croc paper.

glass and brass coffee table- $195. so good. esp. with that GD blue sofa up there.

blonde danish modern bar cart- $48. i like it as is, but would be beautiful painted as well. and that is a great price.

vintage lucite bar cart/side table- $99 yummy. get it.

first off let me say that here in ATL they were putting shit out early. which made me mads. i did not have my game face on last week when i spotted some picture frames. hence i didn't buy the frames. here is what i did buy:

what do you think? the fabric is gorgeous in person, lots of pink and red but i am afraid it's too much. but that could just be my fear of color commitment talking. would it be too much to do the whole chair and ottoman in this fabric?

need some advice please.
you should know that the fabric i WANT for this chair is the lee joffa confetti fabric in the white with black dots. but i can't afford it and i looked everywhere for something similar- no dice.
these fabrics were/are intended for curtains to hide my cat's poop box. but when i put that suzani fabric on that chair i was like holy balls of shit this is beautiful. i need this fabric on something more than a small curtain for the cat!!

here we are again everyone. another craigslist challenge. let me tell you if i were charging, this is where it would get expensive. i was navigating 5 different craislists. which sucked. my eyes started to cross.
anyway..sonchia challenged me to find a modern dining table to mix it up in her traditional space. here's what she wrote:

sonchia was right, the westslope craig DID suck donkeykong dicks which is why i had to go to other cities. so now this is part of the new criteria...if you want to take me up on my challenge you have to provide me with the next 3 cities in your state that you are willing to travel to for a great deal.

so back to sonchia's needs. i told her i would find her some modern tables (and i did) but i also wanted to provide her with what i think is a better way to incorporate a little modern in a traditional space. and that is a more traditional table mixed with modern chairs. i think that look blends better. but that said let's begin:

solid 3" butcher block table- $80!! what a price. a gorgeous piece of wood as well. pair it with some of the modern chairs below. or some bentwood chairs painted, and a modern pendant.

antique pedestal table- $150. i have one of these and i love it! put the settee down below with it and some modern chairs- like tolix!!!

they are calling this a fancy circular table, asian style with pretty texture and joints- $80. it's hard to say how big it is from the pics but it looks interesting. could be a great little dining table.

lacquered dining table and 6 chairs- $1000. yum. the chairs are gorgeous too. but maybe you could just get the table?

antique bentwood armchairs- $55 each. what's not to love?? i would snatch these up in a heartbeat.

antique highback settee- $50!! such a great price...saving your money for some fab new upholstery to sidle up next to one of those tables....

modern stacking chairs- $20 each.

west elm side chairs- $50 each. these are great. i would put them in your traditional living room.

antique secretary- $125. perfect as is it looks like. maybe some different hardware? love it.

antique sideboard- $50. this is unique and could be used as a bar or as a buffet in a small dining room or even in a bathroom for towels and toiletries. just needs some paint. or even as is i think it's rather lovely. or if you're really adventurous have someone carve out a hole and plop a sink in there. your bathroom just got rita'd.

antique drop side table- $75. i would use this as a bedside table or lonny style with a bunch of plants in a sunny spot (see next pic).

8 x 10 kilim from pottery barn- $225. this rug is reversible and its huge. good colors.

mid east antique rug- $369. this is gorgeous! its worn in all the right places and its 9 x 12. hugeballs. a bit on the pricey side for craigslist but not for a huge ass rug as pretty as this.

ikea 9 x 3 wool rug- $500. also pricey but this rug was $1200 and it's really good, for ikea.

large woven jute rug- $50!! this is 8 x 14 and i would buy this in a heartbeat. so you should too. i would layer a few ebay cowhides over it for that soft, cozy feel..

like this only cow...(or zebra if that's your bag)

vintage mid century blue and chrome lounge chair- $119. what's not to love?

austin craig is lacking in lamp love. but, i managed to find a few interesting choices:

ikea lamps- $40 for both. these are good looking lamps in person. and a good price at 40 for two. they sell for 50 a piece new.

2 lamps- $30 each or $50 for the pair. hard to tell what these are like w/o seeing them in person. the shape is good. and with new shades and possibly some paint these could be good.

vintage mid century lamp- $30. cool lamp. just needs a good shade.

outdoor love:

2 red rocking chairs- $20 for the pair!! great price. perfect for a porch or deck or if it were me...sitting in the grass somewhere in the back yard near a fire pit and a little table for cocktails..and a different color. probs white. but the red looks perfectly worn and nice too.

ikea outdoor chair- $30. again, great price. i have always liked this chair.

wood and metal bench with texas stars- $60. c'mon...it's TEXAS!! paint it bright red, white, or keep it as is and put some pillows on it. it's a good looking bench. and it's 60 bucks.

6' round douglas fir indoor/outdoor table- $275. are you fucking kidding me? buy this. i want this...think of the outdoor dinner parties you could have?!?! and see the chairs below...

west elm metal indoor/outdoor folding chairs- $150 for 5!!! with that table up there...i am dying down here in atlanta. this is a find. a true awesome find that someone needs to enjoy immediately! cristin...please... imagine that perfectly worn wood table with these metal chairs! gorgeous!!!!

japanese cabinet- $50!! cheap. paint it black lacquer or red lacquer. great for storing clothes.

sometimes you really can find some good shit...

1. regency chinoiserie tole chandelier: $275 -a bit pricey but have you see what some of these go for on ebay and other places?? plus, it's craigslist...talk that shit down! this is great white but could take just about any color and look amaze..

2. 4 vintage thonet bentwood chairs!! - $200 for all 4! whhhhaaa??? these are classic chairs. perfect for a breakfast nook. they are asking to be painted turquoise or acid yellow.

3. antique settee and chair-$300. i'll bet you could get 200 for the settee and 100 for the chair if you split them up. they have great lines. but really that settee needs a little black and white striped upholstery love and she will sing.

4. pair of brass restoration hardware sconces- $50!! for real these are mine!

5. 2 leaning bookcases- $150 for both. i think these would be great in a walk in closet for scarves, purses, or even your shoes.

6. settee- $210. love this. hard to tell if the upholstery is dirty or just ugly..or maybe in person it's not so bad. either way it's a great price, although really with extra 10 bucks? what's that all about? you could always upholster it or have it cleaned. i want a proper entry so that i can put a settee in it!

7. D'OH! crystal chandelier- $135!!! that price is sick folks. i want want want this soooo bad. for my middle room, my living room, my bedroom, my bathroom, my daughter's room and my hall.

8. mid century coffee table- $40! it's hard to tell if this is really shit or not..but i though the shape was unique and the pattern on top appears chevron-ish. for 40 bucks you could so buy it and paint it if the finish was bad.

9. victorian couch- $250. again, you could probably get it for 2 and with the right fabric this is a showstopper. look at those lines in the 2nd picture..gorgeous!

this sunday is the oscars and i need help picking out a dress..

how can you not love a place with 6.6780980.10vabillion dollars worth of rug company rugs all over every floor surface therein? you can't. that's how. christopher and suzanne sharp's (aka mr. and mrs. rug company) london home is featured in the march issue of vogue (U.S.) and when i saw it i nearly fell out. i also exploded with rage and bitter jealousy. i love the simple, shabby english country style mixed with modern elements like rugs, and lucite and art and funky chairs. it's my fave look (lately).. anyway...the photos are terribly small and that makes me want to punch hamish bowles in the face. so go here to see them big or go buy the vogue with tina fey on the cover.

bar cart photos coming later. promise. remember when in posts past i told you my house was darker than the underside of grandpa's saggy balls? well...the room the bar cart sits in is the darkest so i have to wait til around noon ish to get the pics.

when i was first out of college i was back at my moms house skinny from lack of nutrition and probably still high from too much weed. not so for entry level fashion writer lauren mcgrath. she and her designer mom set to work on her first apartment, decorating it together. mom is a designer (duh), so this is why her place looks better than mine does. also, raise your hand if your first apartment "fresh out of college" looked anything like this....yeah...no hands. mine had a futon bed and a whole lot of walmart bed in a bag. but i did manage to paint every single wall in it bright fucking red. blood red. and i wasn't out of college. i was 24.

love the 2 small tables. so good for small spaces.

i am not sure about the curtains not going all the way to the floor. can any of you designers tell me why they did this? i don't hate it, i just thought this was some kind of golden designer-y rule...curtains always to the floor.

it's good, no? not shiny yet but it will be thanks to an oil free poly. apparently oil based poly's cause your white painted furniture to yellow. says her. tomorrow we are supposed to have more snow (and by snow they mean rain) so i will have to hold off on the poly until maybe thursday? which means a day of drying which means hardware goes on on friday if supermike can get to it. otherwise saturday bitches.

extremely pumped about my bar. here are some things that told me they want to live on it..

every bar needs a cool tray. this vintage orangey red lacquer serving tray from pip and estella decided right away that she would look awesome on the black and white bar with shiny brass rings..and she is cheap...26 bucks. done.

not sure if this ice bucket will work with the orange tray but i really really love it and he said that he would sit happily underneath until he is needed, quietly. he is only 28 dollars. hmmm...

i have sanded and applied one coat of primer. i have to wait for mike to get home to remove the hardware under the flaps, if i did it it would collapse and land on my head causing me to die.
also i ordered the hardware, it was cheap!!! 4.50 per pull and i got the last 2!

susie over at eye spy does a weekly bit where she scours atlanta craigslist for cool shit. she found this bar cart. i have been wanting a bar cart so i called the number on the craigslist page...the woman wanted 80 bucks for it and i said you're fucking crazy oldlady!! i'll give you 10! not really, i asked if she would sell it for 20 and she said bc she was moving she would! so i did. its 60's, on casters and it has a shiny black top. i am going to paint it "swan" by glidden which i had on hand and then gloss it up with some poly. (swan is basically white)

it extends so that i can put more stuff on it for when we have parties (never).

i will put some pulls on it like this one here on the right..
i'm sure there are cooler casters out there which i will look into. this is a temporary fix but easy to change if i decide i want to do something different.

any thoughts on my purchase?

a home for rent in east sussex. it's called scotts float and i love the way it marries perfectly english country with modern. so fresh and simple and inviting. i want to go to there..who's with me?

well friends guess who did not go to a delicious restaurant and movie last night? that's right, me.
fuck you flu! no pretty red necklace, no creamy red suede shoes..just a bathrobe and men's socks, puffy eyes and am pretty sure there is a spike rammed into my brain, just behind my left eye..i know, i can't see it either but it's there. trust. it also appears as though i have perhaps suffered a stroke as the left side of my face looks paralyzed.

supermike managed some flowers, which was nice...

i got this too. perhaps looking at other people's pretty gardens will send signals to my red blood cells to get their shit together and start doing their job better..

fiona and mike are out having fun so i am alone. which is both good and bad...there was very little food in the house so for lunch i made a quick taco filling (there were hard shells in the pantry) of beans, diced tomatoes, onions, garlic and spices...as i sat eating them i wondered if i puked would an undigested corn shell shard lodge itself in my throat and kill me, mama cass style?
