monday color combo...sort of..

recently i read something that really hit home with me and that was, "your love of design doesn't always have to reflect your own home." i don't recall who said it and i guess that statement could mean different things to different people. but for me it was really kind of freeing. don't roll your eyes!!! it really was! i get kind of bugged out at times when i find i love EVERYTHING!! i mean how can you love everything??! and how can you incorporate EVERYTHING in your own home?? it would look ridiculous and all over the place and random and not focused and silly and contrived and like you were trying too hard..etc.. so instead i THINK ( i could change my mind tomorrow- or even later today) i will just love everything and leave it at that. and just let my own home serve as a sort of museum of stuff, trials and errors, works in progress...like and artist's studio. so what does this have to do with a monday color combo?...not a whole lot really. other than 2 days ago i was really into the work of abigail ahern and wanted my whole house painted dark gray and midnight blue with capricious looking lamps and furry ottomans. and today i am really into the whole english manor look. so this combo is not a combo so to speak but a look at mixing saturated color in general with big florals, stripes, small patterns and antiques and everything in between. i am not sure a person like me without any funds could actually do this look in my own home, this is a look for the rich or at the very least a look that is acquired over time. maybe less carlton varney or nancy lancaster and more rita konig. i think this time of year i am drawn to things that are comforting and cozy and seem to envelope you like a hug from your granny. whether it's balls out grand manor home or a more modern approach it's all beautiful to look at. so here you have it...squeeeeeze!

You are so right! It is very freeing. I feel your pain of loving everything as a gemini especially. One moment I want color everywhere and a bohemian vibe and the next nothing but a white space with country french details.

My style goes back and forth too, it sucks. One day I love this, the next I hate it. I wish I could just pick something...but then again seeing lots of pretty eye candy like these pictures everyday makes me very happy!

i have the same problem. i could probably pin it down if i were to actually *buy* things, but having so much to look at (on blogs and all the magazines i buy) i go back and forth, back and forth...

I love good design of any kind. But I think the space tells you what you HAVE to do for it to feel right. I think what is outside your window is the color that will be most comfortable inside your walls...The style of the house reflects the style of the design. I have never understood being a designer that has a "Look", my look changes everytime the address does.

I so agree!! that is why I am always afraid to commit to an expensive fabric or piece of furniture. I am always changing my mind and style. So I am going to try and just accept my house as a work in progress, mistakes and all!!

I love every one of your examples of beautiful rooms. That makes me a design psycho then, right?
The fortunate thing for me is that we have moved houses and cities (countries) so many times that I can reinvent our home. It usually works.
And it is so much fun.

I'm totally with you on that! I often think that my taste for photos and my taste for "real life" differ. Because frankly, a lot of the things I think look gorgeous aren't that comfortable (and wouldn't stand up to my cats or my BF). It drives me a bit nutters though when I am trying to do my own place b/c I'm scared I won't like it in two weeks :-)

Let's start a support group for people like us who love everything and change our minds all the time. It's good to know we're not alone. ;)

I'm so glad I'm not alone!!!

Sometimes it is just so hard to make up your mind. Especially when it comes to YOUR OWN place and YOUR OWN things!! I'm like you - I love pretty much everything. The trick is to find the stuff that you really REALLY love, and build around that. I'm finally okay with the fact that Hollywood Regency just isn't my thing. Not that I don't appreciate it, or like some bits of it - it's just not what I want to live with day in and day out. But, there are so many other things I do love. And like you, my feelings change with the seasons. I guess that's why I enjoy my white couch - I can change out the pillow until my heart is content!

Like the other commenters I know what you mean! I save all of my favorite pictures to my inspirations folder and whenever I go back and look at them I realize that there is no one theme or style that stands out. I only wish I could have five homes, all decorated differently!

I fear I have the same affliction! Thanks for the reprieve. Either I'm not crazy or at the very least, not alone! ;0)
