fresh and exciting and then more black

canadian house and home's jan issue is all about the trends for 2010. i don't know about you but i could care less about trends. least of all when someone "spots" a trend or "calls" a trend a trend etc. bullshit bullshit...my line...bullshit bullshit... as soon as you label something trendy i want to set myself on fire. i am fond of some trends but can a new trend for 2010 be to not tell me what is the latest trend? that said could we please do away with anything that looks like a grain sack? ok thanks.

while flipping thru said issue i saw this dining room and was smitten. i think it is fresh and exciting and it pleases my eyeballs. the big ass light fixture, the cool shelves in the back (love those), the sconces painted black (doing this to mine tomorrow), the settee and industrial looking chairs...it's just fun and cool and i haven't seen it a thousand times.......yet.

and then there's this- black walls. glimmering gleaming glowing black walls:
a major "trend" right now and i am so not over it. how could you be? it's so gorgeous! it's warm and sexy, bold and neutral, and it just plain makes me want to butter my corn. so perfect with the light floors and the woven blinds.

what are the trends you would like to see go and stay forever? even though it is understood that we as a group hate the word "trend"...

Can we be done with antlers and taxidermy as kitsch?

apple tree- agreed. move on. there has to be a similar graphic coming out of the wall type statement we can make without the use of animals.

philippe starck louis ghost chair...i read somewhere that it had seen its day (ouch-like a knife through my heart!) i have one and it's kind of a prized possession to me. i still love it...no matter what the cool people think. :)

boops..a ghost chair? reeeeallly??? in my mind this is what we call a classic. never a bad decision to own a ghost chair.

cindy- fuck no...no REALLY.

I'm so tired of the vinyl wall decals. And people saying that they "curated their space".

I love the industrial trend. I want to see more of that. In general, I want to see less rooms that look like no one uses them and more rooms that look like people do.

I also had enough of suzanis but I still love ikat. I mean really really love.

Do you think we have seen enough of a really really fancy ornate room with tons of moldings, with one modern sofa in it? I dunno.. sometimes i like that.

I also want to see more of whatever windsor smith, miles redd and mary mcdonald do .

Black is a neutral in my book. I think structure will be/continue to be important as in lighting, trim, flooring... the rest is the sugar.

I am on my way to the gift show and accessory show at the Javits... over and over I see "trends" there that
translate into the home.
I'll let you know what I see this year.

jen- not a huge fan of the wall decal either. although this one still rocks my world http://www.housetohome.co.uk/imageBank/b/bedroom83.jpg

sketch- totally agree about rooms that looked lived in vs rooms that look like too sterile and "perfect".

yes to those 3 designers-in fact i was dreaming that miles redd put out a book.

preppy- report back forthwith!

I agree with doing away with curated rooms and rooms that look like you could never live in them. Sure I like looking at a nicely decorated room but I want to see things I can actually translate into my real like home. Things that my dog could lounge on and the cat could cover with fur and things that my husband couldn't mess up. Also, I will never tire of suzani, love it! And I want to see more lamps (read:affordable) please!

I'm not normally a wimp but I think I would be afraid that big yellow rose would eat me in the middle of the night. I'd have nightmares of "Feed me Seymour !" ;) I'm still deeply in love with my tree decal though.... wanna see, http://bgcustomwindows.blogspot.com/2009/08/tree-wall-decal.html

Wall decals in kids room only.

Curated a room? Unless you work for a museum you have no business uttering this phrase.

Black is the shiznit and much as I'd love to there's no way would I do it. My 100+ yr. old ass plaster walls already have too many coats of paint on them to want to venture into this realm. Can you imagine the work involved in coming back from them? Yeesh.

P.S. Fuck You ;)

THANK YOUUUUUUU for posting that beautiful black room! I can't wait to paint mine black!! ps - did you scan those images? I just got a brand new printer that's supposed to be amazing but the scans are pretty crappy. I'd love to know your "trick".

ps - I was thinking the other day (mainly because so many decorating bloggers had babies recently), how much I'd love a no BS post all about childbirth from you... it'd be too hilarious and disturbingly true. I want to really know what I'm going to get myself into someday!!

I predict that seagrass will soon be the big thing that dates a space. I like it, I have used it on two jobs lately, but wait and see... soon we will be saying what the hell were we thinking.

room service....very interesting. you might be right.

haha. If everybody's doing something, its a "trend". I feel it must be identified as such, and then we can see if it shakes out in the wash.

Love your blog, love your voice, love the number of times you say Fuck.

Love,
Betsy

PS. Viva la Black Walls - for now.

Trying to figure out those shelves - they almost look like carbon-copy coffee tables that have been sawed in half (or fourths??) Clever, tho - me likey!

I hope acrylic furniture stays around for a while. And I really, really hope that chesterfields aren't considered trendy because I feel like I'm seeing A LOT of them lately. They're a classic, yes?

Black walls rule.

I think seagrass has been around for a while no? I think in the right setting it will never look outdated, like in a beach house. In manhattan, maybe.

I still absolutely adore it. It can humble a room and provide a texture that nothing else can. Except grasscloth walls. Which I also love, and which may be a "trend".

Amen to the grain sacks, feed bags, burlap trend! Also, anything pseudo-French. Crowns??? Why??? Letters and numbers. Birdcages. Black furniture, shelves, and cabinets with or without the ubiquitous white beadboard. Rooms straight out of Pottery Barn, Ballard Designs, OR Anthropologie. Zebra or leopard print anything. Chandeliers in every room. Graphic print bedspreads. Baby poop brown walls. "Stupid 3 plants". : )

I love black walls but I think black wall paper is the way to go. I HATE ghost chairs and acrylic furniture and those hideous white plastic tables-the round ones-what the fuck are they called? I forget- and I just read that neon is a new trend but I hope it doesn't last. I hate trends-if you like it and it suits your style it isn't a trend. If you use it because it is trendy you have no style. I hate mid century modern-it's my mother in- law's furniture only hers is first time round. To me it looks dated not new and trendy. I too an sick of rooms that don't look livable. IMAO it takes talent to design a gorgeous room that is real and livable. I wish robins egg blue would go away. MOST OF ALL I can't wait for animal skin rugs to disappear. FUCK
