that's what i thought! meryl streep's character was great, but amy adam's came off as sort of whiney. and the ending with the butter was just a little much...

Hello twin! I watched this On Demand tonight and thought the same thing. I loved Julia but didn't love Julie. It also made me think "she had a blog, so what?" haha. Guess things are different now than 2002. I have a blog! Where's my book deal??

couldn't agree more. We watched this On Demand tonight. The ending blew chunks. The idea of butter sitting in the Smithsonian was farfetched and the idea of rancid butter makes me wretch anyway. Amy Adams = whiney biotch. Meryl Streep = love. Overall, overhyped.

I just saw it lastnight too! Meryl Streep and Stanley Tucci were pretty great, but the rest of the movie - not so much! I just wanted to stay in Paris. I felt sorry for Julia when they had to leave their lovely Parisian flat!

I have to disagree. I really liked it. Granted I was super hungry when I saw it with my husband in the theater, but I liked it. Then again, I like any movie about food. Two of my faves: "Like Water for Chocolate" and "Big Night".

here's my take on it: first and foremost amy adams was miscast. having read the book the real julie powell came off as jaded and crass and sardonic where amy gave us naive, whiney, pathetic. also in the book her husband was more of a turd, actually they both seemed kinda like turds in the book. partly the reason i liked the book, her admitted asshole-ness. i mean in the movie when she and her pal are talking at the bar about what a bitch she is i was like...what??? where in the whole movie does amy adams give me "bitch"?? i think amy adams is a great actress..junebug anyone?? but she just comes off as too sweet and ditsy to have played julile powell. i felt like for the movies purpose they played off the two couples. which in turn made the movie more cutesy.
ok...meryl. as an actress myself rest assured this woman is pretty much my hero. when she is on she is unstoppable. but i was not impressed AT ALL with her version of julia child. it started off well enough but i thought it just kind of fizzled into some kind of over the top meryl streep character. and stan tucci just seemed bored. although strangely i wanted to do it with him. anyway..
i think overall the miscasting and the watered down julia were the fault of the director and the screenwriter. perhaps the director just didn't have the balls to say to meryl..hey..you are losing your julia, get it back before we shoot this next scene.
and the butter...it happened in the book so i was ok with it. in fact it's how the book ended.

i know most people probably loved meryl and she WAS good just, to me, not good enough. i am a stickler for dead on impersonations. i used to do impersonations in my improv show so i am a stickler for perfection. to my own detriment obviously bc i am sure as i said most people were probably blown away by meryl's performance.

I watched it the other night and well ... "meh" was my exact sentiment. Not impressed. And the "bitch" reference ... I was also scratching my head ... she seemed like a cutesy and sweet.

Really? Bummer. I started My Life in France this week, and am loving it. Oh well, C'est la vie!

THANK YOU! I couldn't agree more.

ditto on all counts. mylittlehappy, i'm also reading my life in france and it is lovely! let's keep reading to wash away the memories of this terrible film.

i have, however, committed to calling any future beef i may encounter "beouf." because i think it's funny.

I haven't watched it because it doesn't call to me. I am not a Meryl worshipper and and think she sucks just as often as she is good. I like Amy Adams okay but need to see her stretch a bit more before I'm sure. I liked her in The Sunshine Cleaning role. Stanley Tucci is tops on my list of sexy bald men, along with Patrick Stewart. I'll take Stanley Tucci over RPatz.
