from the high street

shiny black gorgeousness for your mantel or tablescape a la david hicks:

i spent some time perusing the new david hicks book yesterday and was amazed at how every single room he ever designed looks completely modern and relevant. and i see the influence in all of our favorite designers working today. from KW to miles redd to charlotte moss to your mother. if u have the xtra 60 bucks lying around i would say it's a sound investment.

and also this room by emma jane pilkington (best name ever) is my new favorite:

i always marvel at designers' ability to put disparate elements together and achieve cohesion. but something about the pilkington room bothers me. without seeing the rest of the room, everything seems up again one wall. and the huge negative space over the bed bothers me for some reason. i wonder what the rest of the space looks like.

I am with you. His vision is pretty spectacular. And I want that striped rug badly.

boops. that's sort of what i love about it (that and the rug!). there is a certain un-decoratedness about it. it's quirky, and that bed is divine. the bed itself, and the bedding. plus i don't ever buy into the fact that the bed needs something over it. that said i am drawn to the emptiness of the wall above the bed. i guess it just doesn't bother me. but i can see how it could bother some.

yeah i see what your saying...everything doesn't always have to be so "laid out" all the time. i envy people with that kind of confidence in their designs.

Funny you should post a room that reflects a color scheme thought I've been having...
I've been tossing around the idea of pearly-gray walls, with gold (rather than silver) accenting for the nursery. Without trying too hard, I want it to be lovely, and not too literal (i.e. "must use silver with cool, gray tones)
Planning a post for the upcoming days...
Thoughts???

That room is lovely! That little nook under the window is perfect. I wish I could see more of it!

this is why i own 9 cans of spray paint. When people like you tell me what color stuff should be, I go on a rampage and spray everything that is not nailed down WITH high gloss finish. easy peasy.

I'm naming my daughter Emma Jane Armour---that's it. Love the Pilkington room as well...so chic. As for David Hicks, how the hell did he do it? If only I could create one room as timeless as his millions...
