a secretary update and then an open discussion and i have pms

pms makes me want to kill people. that's all. oh.. and eat kettle brand jalapeno potato chips until my asshole burns and start drinking wine at 3:30 in the afternoon after a "rough" day at the bookstore.

ok...how do we feel about liming? i know...i hear it's difficult to say the least. and i am not sure that underneath the horrible stain of the secretary is a wood that will take liming. in fact it might look like this piece:
that is to say more moldy than limey.

no we here at MFAMB are thinking more this:

i could get some of this and see what happens?

althoooooough....look at that lovely GRAY limewashed desk...hmmm...you feel me?

this is a nice finish as well...

i mentioned in the original post that i would reward the winning input-er with a bag of chocolate hearts and some smarties...well a lot of you are/were on the same page as me with the light wood finish..but jill j was the first to pipe up with something that actually gave me a ladyboner and that is to "Strip it, stain it light gray, matte finish for a top coat, and paint the inside (insert color of choice) lacquer. Finish with a dangle-y knob. Beauty." congrats jill j. you get some candy from me. email me and we can discuss flavor preferences.

so now we all have to decide which lacquery color we want.
remember...this is as much your project as it is mine.
if it all looks like shit i will do this:

You are freaking funny! Your PMS starter sentence made me laugh out loud in a meeting! bad girl because I can't repeat what you said! And another note that cabinet is awesome I wish I could find one and redo it. that would be a fun fabulous project!

I am so partnering up with you on this one. I've got the 1990's pine armoire that holds the TV (don't go there--I want it on the wall- he doesn't) and was thinking of liming it a la "It's Complicated" living room. If you do this you'll need to give us step by step...although mine is about 8 feet tall and weighs 300 pounds...a little more difficult to move.

If you plan to leave it closed most of the time, do something that shows the wood grain. Painted, the door on the front is just a blank rectangle, not so great to look at. I guess you could put some girly trim / medallion / whatever on it. But I hope you have space to leave it open. Once you fix up the inside and insert goodies it'll be way more interesting to look at.

Okay, gotta go. It's 3 minutes to five. Almost time to start drinking.

You and your alcohol comments are hillarious! I too could start drinking at 3 everyday. Heck, I could start drinking as soon as I wake up but some how i restrain myself. I guess because I have to go to work. Again, you're a funny girl. Keep the stories coming!

Just to be Devil's advocate, I have to ask, isn't your wall grey? I would go with something that will contrast with the wall. I like the last photo you posted.
PMS for me is all about cookies.

I eat kettle cooked salt and vinegar every day.

I LOVE the gray limed wood. LOOOOVE. but maybe not for you. You need woody.

I love the gray limed wood. It's unusual and interesting! I love regular ol' limed wood too - but I like the gray better.
And I still vote yellow for the interior. Not a bright neon, but a happy nice color.

I'm also concerned that it may blend in with the gray wall too much. But then another idea came to mind...I'm craving something shiny on this piece ala Little Green Notebook with the leafing yaknowswhatimsayin?

I say lime away, the worst thing that can happen is you make a giant mess (and a great blog post). Risk takers always win.

I have a thing for ocean blue right now, not dark blue - not light blue. Nicely in the middle.

I say No to the liming.

I want to see it painted a black lacquer color and the inside a bright cardinal red or yellow. This way you can display it open.

i originally didnt say to lime it on purpose--do i get any points for that? i still think waxed, stripped wood grain will give you texture and warmth; a nice contrast with the room.

inside: i like the gilded idea, like a gilded tea box. silver or gold. or i like the idea of marbled paper in the cubbies. OR i like the idea of a great parma violet lacquer. whatever.

i REALLY like the idea of all those cool liquor labels and golden liquor colors...

There's this killer limed looking piece at evolve in Missoula, MT (mountain luxury=love)
there are a couple different washes on a few pieces in the store, would love to know how that effect is reached, but somehow I can't ever get those looks without a big huge mess and compromised brain cells galore.

Instant PMS cure: Nigella's Rocky Road recipe made with pretzels instead of Social Tea Biscuits, and 2 fingers of Jamesons, neat, in a rocks glass. It's a rocks theme.

I like the idea of liming the outside with orange lacquer on the inside. Sexy.

I know I'm late, but - White lime with an orange lacquer interior! and I know now what I'm going to do with the little secretary that's wilting away in a corner of our office/general dumping room. Thanks.

I do believe on the same page as the other MF's that a light gray may fade away into the wall. I do love the grey liming though don't get me wrong. I agree with THL, lacquered black & gilded inside would be purdy..
I just celebrated my 10th year of being PMS free. Just call me an 'it'.

DROOLING over the limey-gray idea - wish I'd thought it meeself, but am wallowing in my own design decisions. Didn't mean to leave ya hangin', though.
I'm all about your orange lamp, and think it will look incredible with the gray - as for the inside, would it be a pain in the ass to paper/modge podge with a cool pattern?

I think your plan sounds like it going to be gorgeous but I wanted to add (I know Im chiming in way late here ) I would not want to strip that piece. Its going to be a shit load of work because of the curved detail on the legs. I guess Im way lazy.

I think you could get a very similar effect by dry brushing it with some light brown followed by a coat of gray without the nightmare of stripping.

Love the idea of painting the inside a hot color.

Taylor said...

pale aqua?? think that would be hot next to that orange lamp. or a spiffy shade of fushia.

You kill me. I'm not going to pretend I know anything about lime washing so you're better off taking the others' advice. BUT I did want to say, I think it will look fantastic. And if it doesn't---paint it black and tell everyone it's their fault. XX Kate

hmm. the gray limey is sweet, I was thinking warmer wood because of the gray walls but, given the gray wash, I'm stumped on the inside. Some hot, bright lacquered finish sounds like it would be garish with all the boozy bling. What about a matte, faux bois inside done with subdued hues. perhaps red&pink, teal&lime, etc. . .
it'd be hell to do but . . .

pms makes me also want to kill others but also my self.

Hello there,
Another funny post. I hear on the PMS, I am right there with you. I was wondering the other day when I was craving wine at 3:30 if it meant I had problems, glad to know I am not the only one. Gray stain, yes please!

CLAIRE WATKINS, ASID ALLIED said...

How about headed over to Paper Source and shellacking some of their gorge papers on the inside! Can't wait to see the gray, will look dynamite!

I think I am going to write all these fabulous ideas down, in case I ever have a project like this in the future!! What great ideas everyone has! You are a lucky girl.

Forgot to mention yesterday - while I was on the pill, no PMS. And in fact, since I was on that 3-months at a time pill - no period. Yay! Now that I'm off the pill, I'm noticing some hormones for sure, but nothing too bad. But my appetite has been out of control, just crazy.
I did find, though, in high school (when I had really bad cramps) that a muscle relaxer and a nap worked wonders! ;-)

I tried a liming wax (not that brand) and it did absolutely nothing. I had to return it.

I did put it on stained wood, not raw, but the product claimed that it work even through wood stain.

I'd go with a bright lilac lacquer. Saying it out loud requires a lot of tongue action, and that's always a good thing in my book.

Joslyn said...

we limed all the tongue in groove wood walls in our living room last year. ALL of it...

It took a long time but wasn't especially hard and i LOVE the way it looks.

loving that damn liming wax.
