susie over at eye spy does a weekly bit where she scours atlanta craigslist for cool shit. she found this bar cart. i have been wanting a bar cart so i called the number on the craigslist page...the woman wanted 80 bucks for it and i said you're fucking crazy oldlady!! i'll give you 10! not really, i asked if she would sell it for 20 and she said bc she was moving she would! so i did. its 60's, on casters and it has a shiny black top. i am going to paint it "swan" by glidden which i had on hand and then gloss it up with some poly. (swan is basically white)
it extends so that i can put more stuff on it for when we have parties (never).
i will put some pulls on it like this one here on the right..
i'm sure there are cooler casters out there which i will look into. this is a temporary fix but easy to change if i decide i want to do something different.
any thoughts on my purchase?

love the hardware you want to use!
its like an orgasm on wheels
score! it's gonna look fantastic in "swan"
Sizzlin'!
I like Grey Goose & Tonic FYI.
It's good. Hardware rocks. We want after shots. I am digging the gal who scouts this stuff out for everybody. Cool or what? There is a marble top table I'd get if I were closer.
I wonder if someone does this for the DC area? If not, dear interwebs, please consider this a request. I'm just putting it out there.
What a great find. Love what you have planned for it.
I even like it the way it is... maybe with a shiny West Elm rectangular tray on it in White or sassy yellow.
Can't wait to see it all made over. Your Craigs List has way cooler stuff than my Craig's list.
$20. really? SCORE! looking forward to the reveal.
score indeed! great bones, can't wait to see the after!
woah. that piece is insane! i want it!!!!!
loving the hardware you chose...my favorite is the one with the diamond back.
so excited to see the finished product!
xo
You lucky ducky! A total steal and I'm super jealous. Looks like it's walnut or teak. I'd simply polish it with Finish Feeder and keep it just as is but my house is filled with Danish Modern.
I love this find, I really like those pulls but as you know Anthropologie has some really cool pulls and knobs!! Great find!
Love it. Hope you are going to post some after pics.
I just found your blog today! Woman, you are hilarious. My stomach still hurts from reading your HGTV Design Star commentary. My sentiments exactly about the whole damn thing.
Have a great one.
I have a lot of thoughts on your purchase... thoughts about how you should pack it up and ship it to San Francisco, thoughts about how great it would look in my living room (after you've painted it, of course), and thoughts of jealousy about the low, low prices over there in Hotlanta!
Srsly! Awesome find. I know you'll rock it with some gorgeous booze bottles and a tray!
SCORE! please post pics of the "after".
Cool beans. So, what will you do with the secretary in your entrance, that you were going to use as a semi-bar cart?
nice score! pray tell where in the ATL did you find such groovy hardware?
I'm straight up jealous! And thanks for the new blog to check out. I'm just up the road in Chattanooga and I'm always in Atlanta so I might find something great because of her blog.
linds- can't you see my lady juices on the pics?
raina- i will make one for you..
perfect gray- ha ha! i tried to buy that table too for a bedside table but it was sold!!
mb- no..no..must be painted..
amanda- welcome to the coolness. and thank you i am grateful to the tards!! come on season 4 (?)
modernsauce- the hardware comes from http://www.muffshardware.com/
Muff's Hardware??? ;-)
I love it - I was thinking that it needed some ring pulls before I scrolled all the way down. Looks like you're on the right track, sister!
And whether you entertain or not, that extra space that folds out will come in handy to hold all the extra booze you're going to need if they do have a season 4 of Design Star.
you got a great deal! i was JUST thinking "what ever happened to mfamb's project booze?" (i know, kinda sad!) can't wait to see this transformation. love the pulls!
Great cart, but personally, I would not paint it. I think the wood looks urban cool.
I might consider leaving the shiny black top and painting the base black. I think it would look so handsome and be a better background contrast to your lovely glassware, bottles or decanters. Plus you get to keep the water resistant finish, and for a bar cart, that makes sense. Love the hardware.
If you do decide to paint the top, consider spraying it with a spray paint made for plastic finishes or buy a primer that will help the paint stick. Just a thought. Great score!
chrysta welcome!! it can get pretty lascivious around here...you have been warned.
anon- while i can see that keeping it woody would be urban cool, i am not so sure i fit into the urban cool aesthetic. at least not for my own home. also, i promise that in person this wood is a nasty color.
joanne- i am not painting the top. just the base, and i thought about black but the room it's going in is super dark and can't handle a big heavy black piece of furniture. it needs the lightness of either white or pale pale wood tones.
good news is that i can repaint it if need be in the future.
score!
Dude! No way 20 bucks, that's awesome!
Looking forward to the after.
I kinda hate you. A lot. I've been looking for an awesome bar cart. And you found it. Sleep with one eye open.
Susan @ www.peanutpetunia.blogspot.com
This is me loving this :) :)
Love the drawers. you can leave them pulled out and stuff all kinds of goodies in there...mixers, booze, mixers, booze....
post progress pics and throw a damn party! (I shouldn't be talking)
lol i loooved your comment. thanks so much! and i'm super excited to have found your blog. oh i've missed a lot i see!!!
A score indeed.
Dude you scored!
Well, what can I say that hasn't been said?! SCORE. Hate you. Love you. A Lot. Jeals. Post Pics.
Oh! I know! Why don't I come HELP you make it fab?! We Could drink WHILE we sand, paint, whatever. lovesies? Me thinks yes.
Ha, I totally thought of you when I checked in with Susie's weekly round-up and saw that cart. And dude, why'd ya go and spill the beans on Susie's brazilliant craigslist finds. Now everyone is gonna be checkin' in and I didn't need the competition. ;0) But seriously, she finds the best stuff and I too have made a purchase because of her exquisite taste.
$20 bucks, yeah, I'd say you got yourself a sweet steal.
Love this, esp the extensions, but what happened to the secretary desk that was going to become a bar?
I paint everything so this is really hard for me to say, DO NOT PAINT THAT!
It is gorgeous as is. The wheels are also perfect and many retailers are trying desperately to recreate them.
Every once in a while we have to love something the way it is (like our kids).
Trust me on this one!
Katie
that will look great in white..cant wait to see it
What a bargain...what happened to the other piece of furniture you had that was going to be a Potential piss post point?
Sounds great to me! I think it's the perfect, versatile piece. White would look amazing, as would grey. I can't wait to see it complete!
xo
WOW! Great piece, well constructed and nice proportions! Congratulations on finding it! It does look good just the way it is too. Maybe try living with it for awhile before painting it.
Now that is the way to take advantage of old ladies. So jealous.
ok...please explain to me WHY i should not paint it. a lot of you are telling me not to, but no one is telling me why..
trust me when i say the finish in person is horrible. it's fucking orange, yo!
http://www.coolcasters.com/ I got some to put under my coffee table, they've worked out pretty well.
project booze 2.0. now you can have one in each room. I am thinking I need a bar in each room of my house these days...
Totes paint it. New casters, def but that orangey kind of stain is just dingy. It doesn't look like its got any sort of gorgeous patina going on.
great find, way to haggle!
swoony love!
p.s. paint that thing immediately! i don't understand the no- paint comments? your paint and hardware will take it from the 1990's to the the 2000's
Well, your cup runneth over. Long lean husband-loved legs AND a fab barcart project? I am very excited to see the end results.
ALSO I was given something called a blog award yesterday? I am not entirely sure what it is all about, but it was flattering so I assume it is really important and legit. Anyway, I was told to pass it along to my fave bloggers and so I passed it along to you. Check it out if you are interested/do that sort of thing!
I'm so, so, so glad you got it!! And it'll be spectacular after you paint it. I'm more of a wimpy white wine imbiber, but I'll join Ms. Grey Goose in toasting to your savvy haggling skills!
Check out today's pink dental chair. Totally crazy.
I WANT A BAR CART SO GD BAD. I even have a room I named the Liquid Library because my goal is to be all 1960's drunk in it. Sads though no bar in it.
Craigslist rocks and so does your cart! I can't wait to see it painted.
Very cute! It's not all bad in the icky 60's wood color, either.
My reasons for saying don't paint are based strictly on my love of Danish modern and always wanting to preserve those pieces, which can command some fairly high prices when restored. The cart is probably teak, which turns orangey with age, but it can be polished out. However, you stated urban/midcentury modern is not your aesthetic so it's good you're doing your thing, putting your signature on it, and making it work for your home. Look forward to seeing the after.
Jenny- Weren't Roanna and Leon the sweetest? I bought the matching buffet from their set...crazy! I'll email you a pic when I get it in place.
