not that i am at all dissing the lovely blog posts i have read over these last few days on the set design of this movie...they were awesome!! this is more about the movie itself..the acting mainly. i am, after all, an actress above all else. so i was a little curious about the casting of drew barrymore as little edie. i mean, i CAN see it, but still i am having to put on glasses to REALLY see it. the trailer below alleviates most of my confusion as to why they cast drew. i saw a picture today in US weekly of drew barrymore and jessica lange in character and i have to say, jessica LOOKS CRAZY CLOSE TO BIG EDIE!!!! anyway i am very excited to see this movie and i think if you have never seen the maysles documentary you should before you watch this hbo dramatization. really. you should. it will explain sooooooo much.
we will meet back here on sunday for a full review!

* I didn't think I COULD or WOULD even be "interested" in seeing this~~~ it's all just just too darned DEPRESSING!!! BUUUUT, after seeing the trailer here, I NOW know I WILL see it... I think I MUST see it~~~ if for no other reason than to ATTEMPT to "understand" just a BIT of this incredible, heartbreaking tragedy.~~~~~~ Linda in AZ *
The original documentary was enthralling. I had no idea anyone could live like this until i saw and understood. I will definitely be watching the HBO version.
I have read so many blogs on this movie now that I have to see it - I will be interested to hear what you think. xv
I can't wait to see the movie and I think drew is perfect for the part. I do not get HBO and a friend is going to tape it for me. Great Post!
chilling. a few years back i was in nyc and was walking along two women who were obviously homeless and it became obvious as we walked they were mother and daughter. they were as funny as they were sad. being in their world haunted me for sometime and overshadowed everything else that happened on that trip. grey gardens reminds me of these dear women. how did i miss the documentary? did you order it online? kathi
Jenny, thanks for coming by and I agree with the trays... they make the best of clutter in ones house. Did you get to see the movie lastnight? I am hoping a friend was able to tape it for me. Please come back soon!
i am so bummed. i did NOT see the movie yet. i went to a wedding so i knew i wouldn't watch it until this morning, but when i went to check the on demand service we have it wasn't there. won't be on again until tonight at 6 pm est. i hope to watch it then!! i will come back to post about it though.

kathi- what a sweet and sad story.
as for the doc. you can rent it thru netflix, otherwise i would suggest going to youtube and watching bits and pieces of it. in fact i did this yesterday and watched a 10 minute exerpt and was completely riveted. basically the whole movie is on youtube in bits and pieces.

I was not disappointed in the HBO version. It helped me understand these two women even better than the original. I thought of my mother and I and my daughter and I and I cried.
i have not seen it yet, buti have it recorded and i will watch it tonight! i had a feeling it would be like that for you mom. i also know that it will be like that for me too.
i tried to watch it last nite but fell asleep! i was exhausted from watching the '75 version on youtube. bless you for turning me on to that and bless whomever took the time to put all 10 segments together for people like me! this is a story that will never leave me. one of the things that kept me riveted was little edie's get ups. they were amazing and to think that she pulled them together out of the rubble. also i was so struck at the sight of big edie lying in her bed, propped up on one elbow and cooking corn on the cob. you can read the story of these women but nothing is so poignant as watching them perform ordinary tasks in the midst of their chaos. whew, i am going to watch it again tonight and i'm not sure why......thanks j.
kathi
ok i wanted to see your full take on the movie!!! I only tuned in because of the heads up you made on your blog! Not sure about Drew -what did you think of the acting? Loved Jessica Lange tho!
