fear and hope

i read this book before i had a child, i don't know if i could have gotten through the first chapter if i had a kid back then. that said, it still remains the best book i have ever read. i mean in my eyes it's up there with to kill a mockingbird. alice sebold's writing is remarkable. if you have never read it i IMPLORE you to read it. i could not put it down. in fact i remember telling my husband to read it and he was all, "what? whatever...let me see this thing"...lo and behold he was done 2 days later.
so....when i heard they were making it into a movie i was super happy. but also like, no way could anyone ever possibly capture the beautiful storytelling in this book. enter peter jackson. there is a reason this guy doesn't make a ton of movies. because he has a writing team (himself included) that takes their time to adapt shit. 8 years to complete the lord of the rings trilogy. the guy makes beautiful movies. i am a fan. so..while i fear this amazing book could be shafted like all other book/movie adaptations i am super hopeful that PJ can pull it off. if anyone can he can.

i had the trailer embedded here but the powers that be said fuck you. so you have to do the clicking. it's well worth it though. if you like trailers.

after my last stupid comment about what does mb mean, i swore i wouldn't post until my embarassment eased up a litte....but, i wanted to tell you that a good portion of the lovely bones was filmed in my area. i own a sandwich shop and they would order lunch from us regularly. it was so exciting to look at the caller id and see 'dreamworks'. one monday morning susan sarandon came in and she ordered a 'cup of tuna'. the girl who took her order is in her mid 20's and spotted her right away. ms. sarandon was very gracious, we never made a scene, but as soon as she left the store, all of the waiting lunch crowd went wild. we waited and waited for another celeb but it never happened. sob. kathi

It's been 6+ years since I read this book, and her death scene still sets me on edge when I think about it. I too am excited to see what Jackson has put together - the trailer is stunning!

This is so timely as I saw the trailer last evening. I have not read the book & after reading your advice to, I will do nabbing this book. It seems like a powerful story & yes terrifying as a parent.

It is SUCH a good book. It has been a while since I read it so I am going to have to re-read before I see the flick.

On another note, I see Alice Sebold on my way to work on a quasi-regular basis :] I practically know her.

...where "know" means "we sit in rush hour, together".

agreed. the lovely bones is number three on my all time favorite books list, after their eyes were watching god and to kill a mockingbird. it was in my hand once i started it until i finished it - which was about a day and a half later. so fun when people have similar book experiences. thanks for posting the trailer. i hadn't seen it yet.
