craigslist score needs some fabric love

in case no one believed me yesterday or in earlier posts when i said my house was as dark as the underbelly of a nutsack, specifically this room...here is proof. this is middle of the day and it doesn't change as the sun moves it's way around the earth. this is largely due to the huge covered porch we have. anyway...this is about my chair...my 85 dollar mid century-ish craigslist score. i actually bought it from a very cool mid century dealer here in atlanta. i walked into his immaculate time capsule of a house and was very excited when he left to go to the basement to bring up my chair so i could walk around and look at all of his beautiful furnishings without looking like a furniture stalker. kinda stupid when he actually could have been going in the basement to put on his skin suit a la this guy. anyway..he brought it up and it was really in very good shape and super comfy. i call that a score. i intend to paint the wood frame something glossy, probably black. but i have no idea where to find affordable, sexy fabric. i want something graphic, not thinking floral and no imperial trellis please (beautiful though it is)...maybe black and white? not too traditional and not too modern. somewhere in the middle. any ideas?

any ideas? lovely readers???

Hi Jenny.
Love your chair and ottoman.

OK. How about a lovely houndstooth check in Brown and white... smallish in scale so not to overwhelm.

Or. How about a muted herringbone fabric with contrasting cording?

Happy Thanksgiving.

I'm using David Hicks La Fiorentina right now and loving it. I love the magenta/wine if you want bold or the Grey for a more subtle statement. Here are some more colors: http://www.shopad.net/account/swatch_details.php?AID=leejofa&swatchID=11031&ss=&sss=

Hmmm.... I kind of like the idea of a houndstooth print too. I would do something smaller-scaled than La Fiorentina. Maybe a stripe with alternating stripe widths - not a ticking stripe or a cabana stripe.
Ballard Designs has some nice fabrics occasionally, you might look there. Speaking of - the creative director's house is in the newest House Beautiful, and there's a small black and white pattern she uses for drapes and a tiny ottoman. The house is just to-die-for pretty.

Also - in the section on paint colors, there is a swatch of a Dutch Boy paint that made me think of you! It's the perfect b'ray.

Hm, I will definitely think on it. I love fabric so much that I get overwhelmed when it comes to choices! But, regardless it's a BEAUTIFUL chair and a great find for 85 dollars, wow! If I don't post tomorrow, here's wishing you and your lovely sweet family (Nicholas BB and all!) a happy Thanksgiving! xo

Yesss! I'm WILD for houndstooth. Here's why--it never looks out of date. My friend's auntie had a black and white ht check sofa during the late '60s and it still retained its chic-ness for decades (long after it died a natural couch death.)

If you wanted something punchier, go for a bigger, over-sized check. You could change out your pillow and use other bright colors to brighten up the nutsack.

I'm so glad you asked b/c I have two chairs I scored on Ebay that I want to reupholster in something along those lines! What do you think about this Waverly (very cost-effective!) chippendale fretwork fabric? I have a herd of animals so outdoor fabric seems pratical!

hmm, I'll have to think about this one for a bit. I'm really into black and white zig zag, but not sure how that would work on a chair...maybe better for the pillow.

Great find though, and I'm dying about the underbelly of a nutsack part- loves it!

Happy Thanksgiving!

I think you need a bold graphic to create some visual pop and counteract that darkness. I'd use a Rubie Green fabric or the David Hicks. Your chair has great lines -- what a fabulous Craigslist score!

Wow what a great score!

You totally scored, and I just know that guy is going to want it back after he sees what you do with it!

many thanks youz guys! i appreciate all of your ideas so very much. so far the big contender is leah's choice at 10 BUCKS a yeard!! what the french?
hell yes! and its indoor/outdoor fabric. which for me and my child and pets is really a good thing. plus a lot of what was coming my way here was WELL over 20 bucks a yard which is/was my ceiling.

I recently did a chair like that in black denim with white piping and I love it. I got it for $7.00 a yard at a fabric outlet. I can send you a pic if you like.

here's a great source for organic materials... haven't used them myself, and I'm not sure if they have upholstery weight. So really, I don't know shit, but they use pretty colors. So there.

I've no thoughts at the moment. I'm barely coherent during the day, much less at 1:00 am. But damn, if that isn't a steal you got. Great lines. I'll get back to ya with thoughts on fabric....
