dookie

we are all hearing the talk about gray being the new brown. and i do love gray. i have a gray entry/keeping room and it's yummy, sort of. i think you need a lot of natural light to pull gray off or you have the wrong gray for the room. my room suffers this way.
but now gray is all up in my face!! it's everywhere. in addition to the pictures in the magazines and on the blogs parading their gray rooms before my eyes...i am now HEARING it. this makes me want to run away. to brown-town. but not yesterday's brown. it would be if gray and brown made sweet love and had a gray and brown baby and named it b'ray. i know what you're saying...ummm...hey dumbass...that's called taupe. but noooo...MY b'ray is not taupe. she is richer and earthier. today's browns are just better. chocolate...mixed with plum and fig. or tea leaves and moss..
here are some yummy browns for you to consider:
1. benjamin moore nite horizon
2. farrow and ball etruscan red
3. benjamin moore appalachian brown
4. pratt and lambert autumn dusk
5. farrow and ball london stone
6. benjamin moore middlebury brown
7. benjamin moore tudor brown
8. farrow and ball buff
9. benjamin moore chocolate truffle
10. martha stewart for valspar fig
11. benjamin moore brown horse
12. benjamin moore mink
i love the b. moore brown horse.
here are some brown rooms for you to enjoy:

where do you stand with the new browns? once a turd always a turd? or likes it?

I could get into brown. BUT I hate that now everyone is obsessing over gray. Does that mean my apt is doomed to be so cliche in a year? Yikes? OR is that gray obsession just in magazine land and in reality, I am still the only one I know with a gray house?
Im the only one I know with a black bedroom... even though that is all over the mags too...

I don't really like a deep chocolate (dookie) brown, but that first brown (sort of a soft mocha) is just perfect, I think! I think grey is about to jump the shark (you like my mixed metaphors?, and I'm curious to see what will replace it...

Love brown...especially the new browns you picked. I have some great grayish/brown/putty in my house I love. Plus a brown dining room. It just works for me and all my stuff!

I don't know... The guest bath at my parents' house - the one I always use when we stay - is brown. I initiated that change a year or so ago, but am now sooooo tired of it! It literally sucks the light and life out of that room, and now that you mention "turd," makes me look at it with an even worse side eye.

I'm still lovin' gray - even thought about it as a name for our bambino (hormones, no?) But, unlike you, I have had no fix of it in my casa...

once a turd, always a turd. some previous renter painted ONE wall of our living room doo-doo brown and I loathe it. I'm still stuck on gray. Or really greige..like Dara Caponigro's bedroom in the Domino book--wish they'd credited that pain color.

Paint color. No pain involved!

i love brown...it's my favorite neutral...i know it's the color of poo, but it's also the color of chocolate, chocolate labs, hot cocoa, chestnut horses...can't be all bad...i was about to go for an ivory/off white monochromatic bedroom but pic #2 is giving me other ideas....

LOVE Brown. Always have even before it was the "(sh)it" color.

My favorite is a deep brown with a hint of red in it like 3,7 & 10. I like it paired with a deep dark aubergine.

My favorite b'ray is Berkshire Beige by Benjamin Moore... my guest room is this color. And just yesterday I was looking at it thinking "is it brown? or is it gray?"... I didn't know at that time there was a b'ray. :)
I also have a room that is Whitall Brown (Ben Moore) - it's a good brown.

I love that term - "b'ray". Let's watch it catch fire all over the interwebs!

Browns and grays are tricky. I think a lot of which one you choose depends on the lighting and your furniture. I do like the warm grays (those that have a little brown mixed in - the grayer b'rays), but they just wouldn't work for me. I have a big dark green leather recliner, and that shade of green doesn't really jive with the gray. But it does jive with more of a browner b'ray color. Right now, I have my walls painted "Windsor Greige" by Sherwin W, and I do like it. In some lights it gets a little tan - which I don't like - but in others its a lovely putty.

I would love to paint a room a deep dark rich shade - like the second or third pictures - but that may need to be reserved for the office. Our living room is at least as dark as yours, so doing a dark color in there would only suck more light out. I might then become a bat.

Anyways - sorry for the long comment here - I do like those warm brown/grays. So much more interesting and less cold than the true grays! I'm not surprised that some designers have made true gray a flash in the pan - designers are fickle bitches!

I like both brown and gray. I think it depends on the light in the room . Great examples here.

oh it's like you were speaking to me! Our bwedroom walls are very similar to bmoore's brown hourse. Though I think it might be driftwood brown? In any event, love love the gray brown of our room. With the white bedding/drapes, it is not cavelike but cocoon or something and I like it.

some great examples here!!

I don’t know mush about colors. And I think I’m color blind. I can’t really see the difference between these color samples you posted.

I'm still totally into gray - I've got two brown based grays that I used in my living room and bedroom. But we're going brown in our dining room! I think we've got a good mix of the two. LOVE LOVE LOVE the swatches and rooms you collected in this post. So inspiring!

I never brown had such range. Brown and gray, I don't know if I'd ever do that to my rooms, but they look so lovely here. I especially love the dark, glossy browns and the greyish, more neutral browns.

ust can't do gray- for some reason, maybe b/c we have too many gray winter days her in the MW. I think you'd love Ben Moore Davenport Tan...kind of like b'ray, with brown as the dominant gene...very easy to live with.
