delightful and small

when i was first out of college i was back at my moms house skinny from lack of nutrition and probably still high from too much weed. not so for entry level fashion writer lauren mcgrath. she and her designer mom set to work on her first apartment, decorating it together. mom is a designer (duh), so this is why her place looks better than mine does. also, raise your hand if your first apartment "fresh out of college" looked anything like this....yeah...no hands. mine had a futon bed and a whole lot of walmart bed in a bag. but i did manage to paint every single wall in it bright fucking red. blood red. and i wasn't out of college. i was 24.
love the 2 small tables. so good for small spaces.

i am not sure about the curtains not going all the way to the floor. can any of you designers tell me why they did this? i don't hate it, i just thought this was some kind of golden designer-y rule...curtains always to the floor.

pretty cute isn't it?

I am no designer, but perhaps when you have baseboards as gorgeous as those, you let them show.

I noticed the same thing about those curtains when I first saw this layout. It would be really easy to add a band of fabric to the bottom so that the curtains reached the floor.

You know Keith Johnson + Glen Senk? The Anthro duo? They have curtains that don't reach the floor. But, they found those curtains at some end-of-the-world flea market and they're made of original Calder fabric. Maybe those curtains are special in some way and she hung them with a rules-are-for-sissies attitude...

What's weird is those are Ikea curtains, and they only come in 98" panels. Maybe the curtains weren't quite long enough to reach the floor, so they decided to make it intentional and cut them off short?

I want to see pictures of your red walls!

Is this in England? The Brits only take their window treatments to the sill.

*shrug*

It is a mystery. Brits have curtains to the floor. Really. As for the cute apartment. Wow. My girlies could only hope for such a space.

Very cute. And doesn't look super designed/unattainable. I still need to check out their blog that was mentioned in the article

The curtains bug me

I like the curtains short- The pug hair would get all hung up on the bottoms, & it'd be easier to vaccuum this way. Very nice place, lucky girl.

I am not sure if those curtains bug the crap out of me, or if I love them that way. For some reason, in this cute little apartment, they work! LOVE this layout, ah! :)

Curtains covering just the windows is all right. Happens all the time.

But this apartment, appealing as it is, isn't as wildly creative as a young girl should be. Oh, right. Her mom decorated it. How will this person ever grow her own design roots?

I hear you, Jean! I'm glad my mom didn't try to furnish my place. But, if she had, it would have been Holly Hobby bedding and little flower wallpaper.
I think that painting those red walls started you on the take-no-prisoners path to finding your own style (maybe not the walmart bedding..)

I think the apartment is really charming. I was checking out their blog just this morning. As for the curtains, dunno. No rhyme or reason.

the curtains look great as they are, I think the place is cute. for anyone!

They are probably just store bought.

I agree it's sort of weird, but I think the curtains stopping where they do sort of lightens up the room--fresher, less heavy. It's not fabulous but I've always hear there are 3 acceptable curtain lengths:
to the floor, to the bottom of the sill, and to the bottom of the glass part (works if you have a large or crown molding window sill).

My first place totally did not look like that- and mine now still does not. One day it will.

They mentioned in the article that the apartment is really small, and that the windows are the one thing that saves it from being oppressing. Maybe they wanted to visually lighten the space, so they shortened the panels...? If it really is as small as they make it out to be, floor length curtains could have been slightly suffocating.

dont you just hate this girl? she's too lucky.

I couldn't stop staring at the short curtains, in my experience those ikea curtains are usually insanely long too, so i think they'd have to hem them that short purposefully.

The mom and daughter duo are a little grating, but they do actually have kind of a cute blog (cute in a, we're so rich and buy lots of cute things you can only look at kind of a way)

Maybe they had to economise somewhere. Poor things. The GFC has a lot to answer for...

JUST got my new TH today (sooo sick of being at least two weeks behind everyone in glossy subscriptions, but whatev's)
Yeah, was puzzled with the short curtains look, too. Hope this isn't the start of what designers will coin a "recession-panel" look.

the curtains remind me of a story isabella rossellini once told about her mother ingrid bergman. the family dog used to mark (pee on) the bottom of curtains. ingrid cut all the curtains short so the dog's aim couldn't reach them...
in that room pictured above, i like them, they give a less formal feel...

Ahhhh!!! Just read the comment with the story of Ingrid Bergman's curtains!!! I'm glad I'm not crazy for having that same thought. I bought some fairly nice curtains last year (nothing tooooo special, but lined and pinch-pleated)and was so pissed when I hung them up and found that they are about an inch and a half too short!!! I could lower the rod, but then I'd have to lower the bamboo shade, and that would cut into my precious little sunlight.... and since they're by the back door, they have been known to be marked on.... so I left them because at an inch and a half too short, at least they don't sit in the mess if it happens! Sad, but true.

As for this apartment - I thought it was way cute. Noticed the curtains, but thought that maybe they only cam 84"??? Evidently not, so I'm not sure. Must be intentional. Maybe they're trying to start a new trend.

It is a rule and they did break it, but there is nothing stopping a band of fabric from running in and sewing itself to the bottom in the middle of the night and giving everyone a surprize in the morning...great room, love the yellow tables @ coffee table...

CarolAnne - camdesign said...

sorry...blue tables, I love the blue tables as coffee tables, I need my glass checked, lol

Those are Ikea curtains and they come in mega long lengths...I would know as I bought some similar here in Austria (and they still weren't long enough for these tall ass ceilings.) I think they look cute here..and I was obsessed with this house...so damn cute. And in Austria they cut their panels this way too bc of the heaters under the windows...if your panel covers them you lose the heat. We didn't cut ours and fold it up and shove it in the window sill in the winter and it looks terri, but i can't bring myself to have capri curtains!
