i would cut a bitch

srsly. they can't be as good as they look. who's had one?

i imagine that the outside is a little like those old school wafers...you know the ones that come in brown, pink and barf color? and the inside is creamy and smooth, like nougat. cuz if i ever get to paris to eat one and it's like a reg. macaroon from the grocery store i will beat monsieur laduree with a pair of nunchucks.

please someone take me step by step through the eating experience...

i am thinking of making that into a poster to frame...for every room in the house.

I love them!

They are truly the best. Though, their entire restaurant is a sight...and so delicious. Last time I went, I had pink champagne, macaroons, and finished with "Marie Antoinette" tea...mmm...just thinking about it makes me hungry!

Pretty post, lovely lady. I hope you're having a great weekend. Thank you so much for all of your nice comments -- your blog is a delight :)

outside: crispy wafer like
inside: chewie/creamy

on the whole i found them to be too sweet and a little dry but sometimes you come across one that has a flavor that knocks your socks off (mine was violet and cassis from pierre herme)

i think their (the French) pastries are better than their cookies. like millefeuille and tarte amandine...yum

they're good, but it's maybe safe to say the packaging is at least 50% of the pleasure! not as crispy as the wafers....i kind of love those, but ONLY the white ones...anyway maccarons are softer and thinner and more delicate. there are good ones to be found in NYC, at a place called Madeleine and also a place called Maccaron (!?!?!)...but the most insane-o are from Maison du Chocolat. They are not proper maccarons but are part truffle--the inside is super thick and rich. to die for!!! for reals.

I have asked my friend Kirsten to respond to you. Right after BB King Concert is over. So she will be all toasty and bluesy in her response.

She has digs in France. We must demand she take us at once to eat one in every color.

Do you hear me KiKi? We are coming for you!!

p.s. I am no longer afraid of you. I know I can distract you with cookies.

Think merengue, no idea how to spell it, like egg whites merengue? lemon meregue pie, but not lemony, on the outside with an almondy paste marzipan flavor and texture inside. Saks sell them online, go ahead and try them..then you can decide for yourself if they are worth all the "hype".
They do not taste like "Neccos".

boop- YES YES!!! that's what my imagination tells me they taste like.

margaret- yes i thought so with the packaging. but i am certainly a whore for good packaging. and get OUT with the macaroon/truffle craziness....i think that would be the ultimate. too good to be true.
and..going to saks online right now to investigate...

I too have never eaten one and dream of it all the time. Next time I go to New Orleans.....I"M GONNA DO IT!

They are magnificent.

My husband and I went to Paris for our 10th anniversary and we trecked to the Bonaparte location after a trip to the D'Orsay and it was absolutely magical. They are like God's favorite cookie, and the atmosphere is sophisticated and dreamlike. And of course I schlepped the box home, covered it in a layer of modge podge and use it as a box to store all my Paris mementos.

J-
I swear the next time I go to Paris, I'm sending you a package of Laduree heaven! That's a promise! One MUST indulge in what I consider one of life's greatest little treats (although, I have to say, there is a bakery in SF, Miette, which makes organic macaroons which to me are a rival to Laduree - moist and chewy versus the hard shell with creamy center).
Gaia turns 2 tomorrow! CANNOT believe it!
How was Fiona's school thrift sale?

Jenny....I myself have yet to try one..and I am holding off in doing so until my first trip to Paris...just a tragic, girly, dream..but I want to have a macaroon for the first time in Paris!
Anyway..I have a lovely blogger friend from Brazil name Marina..who is a cook..and she is very passionate about macaroons..you only have to visit her site to know this...

Yet..she hasnt shared any recipes...so I will have to hound her about this..

Yes, Miss Erika, these macaroons are fabulous, but one must actually sit in the temple of gilt and manners that is La Duree to get the full experience. Order one of every color/flavor!

La Duree is featured in one of the last 2 episodes of Sex in the City when Carrie is in Paris, sadly nibbling a tiny piece of yum while wearing a ridiculous outfit.

You are all welcome in France as long as you rent your own car and chip in for groceries! Vive la France!

Love love them.
The restaurants are a pleasure to visit. It is an experience. Enjoy the interiors, colors and packadging. They also serve regular meals. Some also serve breakfast. I use to go everyday to the Champs Elysee location, as I stayed at the Lancaster with a Houston client/friend. But locals will also tell you that the macrons from Piere Herme are the absolute best.www.pierreherme.com They are also magnefique. No restaurant tho, a long line YES !!
Enjoy when you go there!

They are delicious. I had an entire box of coconut macaroons to myself. The packaging is perfection, feminine, delightful. From Paris with love!!!!! Heaven.

I spent 8 days in Paris for our Honeymoon--like you, I was a bit put off my these pretty little macarons. I assumed they would taste like hockey pucks, and be too sweet.
I spent 7 days (with 3 trips to Laduree) stuffing myself with other pastries.
It wasn't until the 8th day, that I "caved", and tried one.
I was in mourning. I couldn't believe that I hadn't been eating these for breakfast, lunch and dinner while we were there.
So I went straight to the counter and ordered a giant box to go.
They are amazing.
The one's from Paul are fab, and Miette in San Fransisco are delish.

I would totally buy that poster. wowee.

Firstly, I have not had one from the temple of Laduree, but, there is an authentic French bakery down the street from my house, surly French baker and all, and his macarons are heavenly. Seriously, melt-in-your-mouth exterior, light as air, with the slightest crispness at first bite. The inside is smooth and creamy with an almost whipped cream consistency. And nothing, I mean nothing like an American macaroon. Those are coconut-based and while delicious (and I have a great recipe for these by the way), are an entirely different kind of cookie.

If you ever make it up my way, I'll treat you to a Gourmandises lunch and macaron. Deal?

Naw, my bloop. Next time I go to New Orleans I'm gettin me some *Sucre* macaroons I meant.....because thats as close as I'm getting.

hahaha love your idea of the poster in every room. I've been to Paris and ate a macaroon cookie served with an ice cream or I think it was sorbet.

All of Paris tastes good and is beautiful.

some have disgusting flavors. kinda like jellybeans? or.. salt water taffy if you've had it. sometimes delish, sometimes horrid :)

Sarah Greenman said...

Wow... my post really got you going, yeah? Trust me - they're lovely to eat as they are lovely to look at. I love them so much that I STOLE one from a friend. A FRIEND, you hear me? I'm so ashamed.

Macarons are good, but Laduree is sold to tourists. Seriously, when you live in Paris, you listen to the French mock the foreigners who keep the company afloat. Lovely packaging, cute retail spaces, lots of Japanese and Americans.

I was in Paris in September and waited an HOUR in line to get some of these. As I was waiting my husband was all 'these better be the best damn cookies on the fucking planet" and I was nervous that we'd waited for a bite of rainbow colored sponge (for $3 each). I was wrong. They are ORGASMIC. I would wait two hours for some right now. Unreal. The packaging helps too. I saved the bags and boxes and have them in my office right now.

I can say I've indulged in a few in my day. Some flavors are better than others and for me the packaging and the gorgeous stores/restaurants are a big part of the draw.

I'm not suggesting you try this at home, but they look scrumptious!
