drapey fabricky lovely

i don't have this issue yet, in fact my barnes and noble has dinosaur reflexes when it comes to ordering the latest issues of anything. i have words with the guy who is "in charge" of the magazines every time i go in. if it weren't for his patchouli wrapped in ass stink i would probably stay longer and figure out what the prob is. but i don't. i think he may have mentioned that it wasn't his fault.
but i went to the elle decor site and saw that it was out on newsstands (not mine) and was pretty smitten with the cover...no?
pretty, good blend of masculine/feminine, orange and lavender, stripes, kilim..it had me. so i peeked inside via zinio digital..

lookee..

suzani's are apparently still relevant. not that i ever thought they weren't but i am a little tired of them, aren't you? still. i am a sucker for fabrics draped over things. i think it is casual elegance personified and it means you are cool and carefree in your decorating. trust.

did you notice all the drape-y drape? i don't think it's cool to put it over everything you own, but i do like that elle decor went here for a change.
also, hands up if your lady bits are buzzing over that black and white striped abstract..

I'm thinking about how to make my own stripe art now. I could totally do it. I love everything about this spread. Suzani is my fave I could put it in every room and never tire of it.

PS my lady bits are buzzing over all the artwork here, love it!

I LOVED that black and white abstract!!!

i like a few things with fabric draped over them... not too much. Very cool.

luv your blog, first time commentor because I don't feel qualified design wise but i couldnt resist...what is a suzani and why do these rooms look like a before shot, i feel like i am missing something here. i shall try and stare at it awhile but i am feeling like a designtard.

hey christie!! glad to meet you.
a suzani is a an embroidered tapestry, usually from an asian country like uzbekistan. the suzani in the pics above are the red and black medallion fabric in the first pic, i think the striped fabric in the foreground is also a suzani as is the sofa fabric in the second pic and the bed coverlet/comforter.
i can see why you would see this as an unfinished room. you either love it or hate it or don't quite get it i guess. i won't attempt to explain it as i guess you can't really explain it. not trying to sound like a douche. hope i don't.
to me this is a very european, un-decorated look. or decorating with your found objects.
can someone else explain this look better?

This too, is my first time to post a comment, but I just wanted to say thankyou for being honest, relevant, and REAL. It's such a breath of fresh air. Your posts almost always make me laugh and smile. You are the bomb.com (okay now i sound like a douche) but that video about Tracey Anderson was EXACTLY what I needed---it's been a rough day! Thanks.

I'm all about the drapey fabricky lovely ! I think the suzanis are like that high fructose corn syrup, best in moderation

Suzani? ok now I have a term for that "blah, blahstan" stuff. I am not a fan, but variety makes the world spin...

As for drapey drapey, can you say uh, looks lazy? I am not a designer, but I have never been with the draped look, unless it is for a party. This one will have to stick around and convince me.

I take issue with see through, (that is, the lack of). and that damn, "I see dead people" movie made it even worse. I think something is hiding under there.

Gives me the leery's and makes me want to rip it off, you know, like the table trick.

Hmmm...not a fan of too much drapey drape.

Orangey red and lavendar are a great combination. Not used enough.

Draped furniture gives the feeling of people who don't have / don't feel like spending the money on good furniture, so they cover it up. It almost doesn't work, but I like it. Maybe because I identify with it. You get the feeling it could change any minute, so yes it's a bit uncertain, unfinished.

Jenny, thanks for the welcome and explanation of suzanis. I am open to this style especially if it saves me having to pick-up around the house.

you think your barnes & noble is bad? i JUST found the march issue at a train station in france. enjoy the april one though — the cover looks gorgeous and i don't hate suzani though that bedspread in the last two photos is god awful.

Also not a fan of the drapey thing. But I do like the way it imparts a more casual (unfinished) vibe.

Analogy for the appeal of the unfinished vibe: It's like your hair. You want your hair to look great -- but like you just got out of bed and did nothing. Sort of like the "this old thing?" idea. No one wants to look like they spent an hour styling their hair. When things are too "done" they blow.

And regarding suzanis: I hate how this became a trend! It is a very old art form. Pre-suzani trend era, I even saw one used in a historic home museum. I have always loved them, and I won't stop loving them, but I'm pissed. It's like when Martha Stewart publishes your collectible in her magazine.

I am all abuzz over this one! I think it's spectacular, all of it. And I, for one, will never become sick of suzanis, even though I agree they have become ubiquitous. I just can't get over all of these amazing textiles. Wow!

A little drapey-drape is good, but too much drapey-drape is bad (just like tequila). I also hate when it looks off balance, like on the kitchen table or in the pic with the black and white art...at least make the drape look like it 'fits'. Does that make sense?

Love the color combo in the first picture though!! And the black and white striped art!
