expedit questions..

fiona needs shelves. lots of them, because she has over 300 books, 4 huge baskets of big, ugly plastic toys, and 3 huge baskets full of stuffed animals, 3 baskets of activity books and coloring books, 3 boxes of crayons and markers and her closet is full of all the little shit that is too small for shelves that i would like to just throw away but i know that if i do she will request it and then cry b/c mommy threw it away. that's called murphy's law i believe? anyway..expedit...what say you? affordable-yes! good looking- yes! sturdy-?? have any of you used expedit? do you like? tell me your story. or tell me what you like the bestest. just please don't tell me how your kid died trying to climb them. that won't do me at all.

I wish I had better news for you but we had Expedit shelves in our office and after a few months the whole thing leaned to the left. When we moved we just threw it away. *sigh* Let me know if you find a solution to the tiny plastic pieces of crap toys.

I had one in my office in our last place and it worked great. We gave it away when we moved though because I was pretty sure it wasn't going to survive a big move. I think it can handle weight, just not a lot of shifting around. I think it would be perfect for Fiona's room.

Loved my Expedit. Had two in my office and they actually held up pretty well even though they were loaded with crap and got moved around alot. They got sold with our house when we moved.

I am currently using the IKEA Besta for my office. It used to be in our family room for toys and TV, stole it for my office and stuck a big corkboard where the TV went. Holds LOTS.

There really is no good storage solution for kid's shit. I got tired of the little pretty storage bins... it was impossible to keep their stuff organized and I started getting OCD trying to keep matchboxes and blocks in the correct bins. Total playtime buzzkill. I gave up and got big ugly green storage bins and just make them throw all their crap in them when its time to clean up. Goodluck.

I don't know about expedit but I've owned a lot of billy bookcases, and they've held up really well despite being made out of mdf and swedish meatballs.

Go for it. Buy the bookshelves. Get baskets to hide some things and live in bliss.

As for the fear that they will come down on your daughter? Go to Lowes or Home Depot and get furniture anchors and install them on the back of the bookshelves to the wall.

FYI. My daughter Lucy bought a massive bookshelf thing at Ikea ( Lack?) and asked her sister Claire and Claire's beau to put it together.... we are talking difficult... the two putter-together-ers are Mechanical engineers and user friendly with instructions. They said the slightest variance in the seams meant for big problems in the end. They did it and then drank a few beers to dull the trauma.
Keep us posted.

bracket it to the wall and let the kid have a go. i mean, come on, what kid is NOT going to climb a book case? jk

Have two, love them. They come with wall anchors, so they don't move.

I climbed a giant bookcase when I was a wee girl. It fell right on top of me. When my mother and her friend ran to see what all the clatter was, they asked me what happened, and I - from under the bookshelf - said, "I don't know, it just fell." I'm not sure they believed me, but if they were dumb enough to ask, maybe they were dumb enough to fall for my pitiful lie.

Anyway. I agree, bolt the damn thing to the wall no matter what kind you get. A kid's gonna climb.

I got one when I decorated my old bedroom at my moms when I moved back home for a brief period at 22, and it was super sturdy! Definitely a good one for a kids room. However, I would attach/screw it to the wall (which you're supposed to do, I just never did)

Don't have one, but I think there is a flickr pool out there somewhere with lots of "styling" examples. I love the pic you posted with the baskets and the little beribboned photo tag on the outside. However, my kids toys are NEVER, ever that organized. No matter how hard I try. Sigh.

They look great but my "system" consists of opening the basement door, throwing the crap down and shutting the basement door...works like a charm! :)

So expedit is great for baskets of toys and books and I used one for my daughters room for years. However, I made the mistake of not having that chat that furniture is not a jungle gym..she decided to use the shelves as steps to get something out of her reach... yikes a total mess. Since i still thought it was ideal for her room i purchased another (shorter) version and it was great.... but a warning... it does not reassemble so nicely. Once it is taken apart and rebuilt, it just doesn't seem to retain its shape.

we saw some of these on sale when we were at ikea (gawd, hear about it here: http://tearinguphouses.blogspot.com/2009/11/ikea-post-continues.html ), and i've been really regretting not buying them for our office. true, i think the quality of ikea furniture is iffy, but it's also such a small investment...

Oh the shaaame... we have 3. Maybe 4. 2 In Shaf's office (one with a desk) and one for my turntables and record collection. We have had no problems with them at all, and we even brought one of them with us when we moved.

I hate to like them because... well because every fiber of my being tells me to. But there's something about the perfect symmetry that pleases the eye :]

i love the Expedit. I say go for it! I would bolt it to the wall, but I say that because I live in earthquake country where we bolt down our cereal bowl for fear of cornflakes flying across the room in an earthquake...

I'm a fan. I've had my large Expedit for three years and it still looks new. I have lots of books stored in it too. I even added a second smaller one to hold more stuff.
